connectionist accounts do help improve on the direct access/search models
what is the lexicon? includes meaning? underspecified
lexicon as pointing to where all that detailed information can be found
phylogenetic terms for learning language is the same for ontological?
why don't we create many more terms?
why can't we express?
new sensations, continua, locations, new objects (describable), mixes
localist representations within a distributed processing model
e.g. PDP interactive activation
where one node represents something specific, and taken together they mean something
isn't this moving towards grandmother cells???
serial/interactive models of word recognition
both logogen (morton) + Forster search models are serial happens in a particular order, need the whole word first
search allows some top-down-like processing (interactive-ish) because allows for semantic priming
allows previous activations, i.e. contextual effects
logogen model allows the threshold to change
but its not the sentence but only past activations
interactive
context should help resolve ambiguity, whether appearing before or after, e.g. word-superiority effect
modular accounts don't make sense
need a broad definition of lexical processing
its not a modular independent single stage in language processing
neither of the serial models account for negative inhibition
search model cant account for complex wide-ranging priming effects with its little semantic priming bin
connectionist model of search model, short-term potentiation to affect frequency and context affects
one big bin, squashed ladder
logogen directly accesses the feature information
priming = in resting level/ threshold
the hard part is processing the context
Marslen + Thomas the wider contexst of the sum total of your life experience
lexical ambiguity we do consider alternative meanings when processing ambiguous words (Swinney), even if only for a few tens of milleseconds before the inappropriate ones are rejected
if you had a large delay before the ambiguous word, it would be interesting to see whether you still access the alternative meanings
